World War II Bombs, Torpedoes and Naval Mines: How Ocean Creatures Prosper on Abandoned Armaments

In the slightly salty waters off the Germany's shoreline lies a graveyard of World War II explosives, torpedoes and naval mines. Dumped from vessels at the end of the second world war and forgotten about, countless weapons have become matted together over the decades. They comprise a decaying layer on the shallow, silty seafloor of the LĂŒbeck Bay in the western tip of the Baltic.

Over the decades, the explosive stockpile was ignored and forgotten about. A increasing amount of visitors traveled to the sandy beaches and calm waters for jetskiing, kite surfing and entertainment venues. Underwater, the munitions deteriorated.

Some of us anticipated to see a desert, with nothing living there because it was all contaminated, states Andrey Vedenin.

When the initial researchers went looking to see what they were affecting to the ecosystem, the team expected to see a lifeless zone, with no organisms because it was all poisoned, says a scientist.

What they discovered astonished them. Vedenin recalls his scientists shouting with surprise when the submersible first transmitted footage. It was a memorable occasion, he recalls.

Countless of marine animals had settled among the munitions, developing a renewed habitat denser than the seabed around it.

This ocean community was evidence to the persistence of marine life. It is actually remarkable how much marine organisms we discover in areas that are expected to be dangerous and harmful, he says.

More than 40 starfish had piled on to one exposed piece of TNT. They were living on iron containers, detonator compartments and transport cases just centimetres from its volatile core. Marine fish, crabs, anemones and mussels were all discovered on the discarded explosives. You could compare it with a reef ecosystem in terms of the abundance of creatures that was present, states Vedenin.

Unexpected Population Density

An average of more than 40,000 animals were living on every meter squared of the explosives, scientists documented in their research on the discovery. The nearby seabed was much poorer in life, with only 8,000 organisms on every square metre.

It is paradoxical that things that are designed to kill everything are hosting so much marine organisms, states Vedenin. You can see how nature adapts after a major disaster such as the second world war and how, in some way, marine life establishes itself to the most dangerous places.

Man-made Structures as Ocean Environments

Artificial features such as shipwrecks, wind turbines, drilling platforms and pipelines can provide alternatives, replacing some of the lost marine environment. This study demonstrates that munitions could be equally positive – the explosion of marine organisms on those in the LĂŒbeck Bay is likely to be duplicated elsewhere.

Between 1946 and 1948, 1.6 million tons of weapons were dumped off the Germany's shoreline. Countless of people placed them in boats; some were placed in designated locations, the remainder just discarded at sea en route. This is the initial instance researchers have recorded how marine life has reacted.

Global Examples of Ocean Transformation

  • In the United States, decommissioned energy installations have become coral reefs
  • Sunken ships from the World War I have become environments for creatures along the Potomac in the state of Maryland
  • Military vehicle parts that have become home to coral off Asan beach in the Pacific island

These locations become even more crucial for organisms as the oceans are increasingly denuded by commercial fishing, seafloor dredging and anchoring. Shipwrecks and weapons dump sites essentially function as protected areas – they are not official reserves, but nearly any kind of human activity is banned, says Vedenin. As a result a lot of species that are otherwise uncommon or diminishing, such as the Baltic cod, are flourishing.

Coming Factors

Wherever armed conflict has happened in the last century, nearby oceans are usually strewn with weapons, explains Vedenin. Millions of tons of volatile compounds remain in our oceans.

The sites of these munitions are inadequately recorded, in part because of national borders, classified defense data and the situation that documents are hidden in historical records. They create an explosion and security danger, as well as risk from the ongoing emission of hazardous substances.

As the German government and other countries begin removing these artifacts, researchers plan to safeguard the marine communities that have formed around them. In the LĂŒbeck Bay weapons are already being removed.

We should replace these metal carcasses remaining from weapons with certain safer, some safe structures, like perhaps artificial reefs, suggests Vedenin.

He presently wishes that what transpires in the Bay of LĂŒbeck creates a example for substituting material after munitions removal in different areas – because also the most destructive weaponry can become scaffolding for marine organisms.
