We are analyzing images and video shared this morning that depict the scene of a reported vehicle-borne explosive blast that Russian officials state killed a senior soldier in Moscow.
Officials in Russia stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that detonated and that he later died to his injuries. A probe is currently ongoing.
The initial step to check the location from which the images originated relied on posts saying the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern district of the Russian capital.
Our analysis employed street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the Russian search engine Yandex to match the distinctive yellow colour of a adjacent residential complex captured in the footage.
Identifying other buildings, lamp-posts and the street layout verified the exact location the footage were captured.
We also checked that the video clips were recent and that the visuals had not undergone digital alteration.
