The Porcine Pardon: Pig Named Six Seven Spared by Miami Dade County Mayor.
It might not have been at the same level as granting clemency to Thanksgiving turkeys, but the county's top official experienced a ceremonial pardon event this week by ceremoniously saving the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“This pig is innocent. She deserves this act of mercy. No offenses are on her docket,” declared Levine Cava in a speech with obvious nods to the extraordinary and sizable number of executive clemencies issued since the beginning of a second term in office.
“Unless you count eating six or seven apples per day,” Levine Cava continued. “Let this swine have a lengthy and joyful existence without fear.”
This ceremony, which both honors and questions the area's customary feast of eating roast pork during the holidays, was established to emulate the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The animal, provided by a first responder, was christened after the current slang trend of young people yelling “six-seven” – deriving from a musical verse – often seemingly at random. The trend became so ubiquitous that a leading lexicon site recently named “six-seven” its annual vocabulary selection.
A Future Secured
This particular pig is now destined to live out its days at a countryside refuge “away from grills and cookware”, according to the event’s official press release.
“This swine clemency has become one of our favorite ways to open the festive period,” said Eric Castellanos, in a notably cheerful message.
“It captures the essence of Miami: vibrant, diverse, and grounded in customs that unite the community. Annually, we are proud to celebrate tradition and kindness in a way distinctively Miamian.”
Participants enjoyed a plant-based fare of spinach croquetas and strong coffee as they toasted the pig's pardon.
