The Game UN:Me: A Psychological Thriller Merging Silent Hill with Social Deduction Mechanics
The recent Day of the Devs digital showcase revealed a number of fascinating upcoming titles, but one especially has captured the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience seems to blend the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill title with the paranoid deduction core of Among Us.
"It's a distinctive experience where a girl containing multiple human souls inside her must escape from a maze of the mind," states developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Shattered Mind
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed female protagonist seeming to be of high school age. Within her exist four distinct souls, each with unique fears and drives. These souls can seize control spontaneously, unleashing their innermost phobias upon her suddenly.
Based on revealed footage, much of the narrative unfolds within a eerie medical facility, while additional clips depict the main character exploring a desolate chapel.
A World of Personal Horror
"What makes you afraid of? What causes you uneasy?" asks creative lead Shun Sasaki. "High places. Small rooms. Authority figures. Elements that appear minor to other people can trigger a deep instinct inside us. This game delves into that concept â fears that are specific to each person."
The central gameplay loop involves managing the persona that emerges at any given moment. However, these souls will switch involuntarily during gameplay. While exploring, every persona's anxieties become amplified and attack the protagonist in succession. When the soul shifts, so does the specific fear the player encounters.
Eerie Visuals and a Deadly Decision
At first glance, UN:Me shares noticeable visual similarities with the Silent Hill series. The setting is populated by orderlies all sporting the identical visage, with unnervingly wide grins. Figures in the lobby have enormous flowers growing from their necks should be. Floral motifs are a recurring element, contrasting natural beauty with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me presents a unique mechanic. Players must determine which of the four souls haunting the heroine is the "real" one. "Each of the souls claims that the body belongs to them," notes a developer. "Throughout the game, you must determine who is authentic."
After a player believes a persona is fake, they must eliminate it. But, since every entity can deceive or obfuscate the reality, it is very easy to choose incorrectly.
"Maybe you've already eliminated the real [soul] with your own hands," the narration suggests. "The final entity remaining could be a fraud. In any case, your choices are irreversible."
UN:Me does not yet have a publicly announced release date, but it is can be follow on platforms.
