My feeling was I got a touch - Alex Carey on review reprieve.
Australia gloveman Alex Carey stated he felt he had edged the ball when he was given not out on review during day one of the 3rd Ashes series Test against the English.
Having been given a life on 72, Carey went on to make a excellent 106 to aid the hosts post 326-8 at the close in the Adelaide Oval.
What happened?
Australia were 245 for 6 when Carey attempted a cut to seamer Josh Tongue.
England lodged a strong appeal, certain they had heard an nick, but on-field official Ahsan Raza gave it not out.
Following captain Ben Stokes opted to review the decision, the footage examined by TV umpire Chris Gaffaney showed a significant spike however this came before the ball had made contact with the bat.
Gaffaney also said he believed there was a gap between bat and ball.
Consequently, Carey was reprieved.
"There was a sound, I thought I'd nicked it," said Carey.
"Being given out would have prompted a review, though not a confident one. There was a definite noise."
Ongoing Scrutiny
Discussion has swirled about 'the Snickometer' during the series after a series of dubious calls.
England's bowling coach David Saker suggested England may pursue this latest incident to a higher level with the match official Jeff Crowe.
"We haven't acted yet, but following today's events, that could change," Saker said.
"It's been a worry for us all series long. We shouldn't be talking about this after a day's play, it should just be better than that. That's the situation."
A Special Hundred
Carey's century was his maiden in the Ashes.
It was also an poignant moment for Carey, whose dad passed away in September. His spouse was in tears in the crowd as the batsman marked the occasion by glancing upward.
"Scoring a century at home with family watching was incredible," said Carey.
"You can probably understand my glance skyward. I'm fighting back the tears. It was truly wonderful."
Not New to Furore
Carey has been at the centre of Ashes debate before.
He was the keeper who notoriously dismissed Jonny Bairstow at Lord's in the 2023 series, leading to a febrile final day.
Speaking about his survival he added: "The technology clearly wasn't synchronized. That's cricket - you get the rub of the green sometimes."
"I might have gotten away with one."
