Larry Summers Steps Down from OpenAI Board
Ex-Treasury chief Larry Summers is departing from the board at the ChatGPT creator, just a week after a series of electronic messages between him and notorious criminal the disgraced billionaire became widely known.
The economist stated in an announcement that he was "grateful for the opportunity to have contributed, excited about the prospects of the company, and eagerly await following their development".
The former Harvard president, who previously presided over the Ivy League institution, declared on earlier this week that he would be scaling back from public commitments due to his relationship with Epstein.
Message Exchange
The recently released messages demonstrated that the official communicated with Epstein until the 24 hours preceding his 2019 detention for alleged trafficking of minors.
In another announcement, the technology organization expressed it respected his determination to depart.
"We value his many contributions and the perspective he brought to the directors," the company remarked.
Legislative Background
This news comes after the two houses of the US legislature voted on recently to approve a legislation that would compel the Department of Justice to release its files on Jeffrey Epstein.
The legislation will then move to the desk of President Trump for signature. Trump has said he intends to sign the legislation, after reversing his stance on the subject following pressure from his base.
Correspondence Findings
A batch of financier-linked correspondence disclosed by the Congressional committee last week included several high-profile figures in the billionaire's past associates, without indicating any criminal activity by those figures.
The messages indicated that Summers and Jeffrey Epstein dined together frequently, with Epstein often seeking to link the official to influential world leaders.
Individual Statement
After the emails were released with the public, he said he assumed "total ownership for my poor choice to continue interacting with Jeffrey Epstein".
He continued that he desired "to restore confidence and fix connections with the people nearest to me".
Previous Positions
Summers held senior posts under party leaders; serving as economic leader under Bill Clinton, and as leader of the White House economic team under Barack Obama.
He led Harvard from 2001 to 2006 and remains a professor there. When announcing his step-down from public duties earlier on Monday, he stated he would continue his teaching commitments.
Additional Consequences
Following his announcement on earlier this week, the Washington think tank, a left-leaning policy institute in Washington where he was a prominent member, announced that the economist was ceased to be associated with the institution.
The former official joined the board of the AI company, which develops ChatGPT, in 2023 - following a unsuccessful effort to replace its CEO OpenAI's head.
