‘It’s impossible not to smile’: a quintet of UK teachers on handling ‘‘sixseven’ in the school environment

Throughout the UK, school pupils have been shouting out the expression “sixseven” during instruction in the latest viral trend to sweep across educational institutions.

Although some instructors have decided to stoically ignore the phenomenon, some have embraced it. Several educators describe how they’re dealing.

‘I thought I had said something rude’

Earlier in September, I had been talking to my year 11 students about preparing for their qualification tests in June. I can’t remember specifically what it was in connection with, but I said words similar to “ … if you’re targeting marks six, seven …” and the whole class burst out laughing. It caught me totally off guard.

My first thought was that I’d made an allusion to an inappropriate topic, or that they perceived an element of my speech pattern that sounded funny. Slightly annoyed – but honestly intrigued and aware that they weren’t trying to be hurtful – I persuaded them to elaborate. Frankly speaking, the description they then gave didn’t make greater understanding – I continued to have little comprehension.

What possibly caused it to be particularly humorous was the weighing-up gesture I had performed during speaking. Subsequently I discovered that this frequently goes with ““sixseven”: I had intended it to assist in expressing the act of me thinking aloud.

To eliminate it I attempt to bring it up as often as I can. No strategy deflates a phenomenon like this more thoroughly than an teacher attempting to join in.

‘If you give oxygen to it, then it becomes an inferno’

I have worked as a instructor for fifteen years, and these crazes last for a month or so. This craze will fade away shortly – they always do, notably once their little brothers and sisters start saying it and it’s no longer cool. Then they’ll be focused on the following phenomenon.

‘Sometimes joining the laughter is necessary’

I started noticing it in August, while teaching English at a language institute. It was mainly boys saying it. I taught students from twelve to eighteen and it was prevalent with the junior students. I didn’t understand what it was at the time, but being twenty-four and I recognized it was simply an internet trend akin to when I attended classes.

These trends are constantly changing. “Skibidi toilet” was a well-known trend back when I was at my educational institute, but it didn’t really occur as often in the learning environment. In contrast to “six-seven”, “skibidi toilet” was not scribbled on the whiteboard in class, so students were less equipped to pick up on it.

I typically overlook it, or occasionally I will chuckle alongside them if I inadvertently mention it, attempting to empathise with them and recognize that it’s simply pop culture. In my opinion they just want to enjoy that sensation of belonging and friendship.
