Ayoub El Kaabi's Spectacular Strike Caps The Atlas Lions' Victory Over the Coelacanths in Africa Cup of Nations Opener.
Host nation the Moroccan side shook off a anxious start to beat Comoros in the tournament's inaugural fixture on Sunday, after strikes by the Real Madrid attacker and super-sub El Kaabi in the latter period.
It was a less than dominant showing, though, from the heavily tipped hosts, who are ranked 97 places higher than the tiny Indian Ocean nation in the world rankings and were forced to toil hard for the victory in rainy conditions at the Prince Moulay Abdellah stadium.
Tense Beginning and Missed Chances
The hosts failed to convert an early penalty and were goalless at half-time despite dominating possession, finally breaking the deadlock in the 55th minute.
It came when full-back Mazraoui did well to prevent the ball from going out before slipping it across for Brahim Díaz to sidefoot home.
Every first match is invariably tough but we improved in the second half,” said Morocco coach Walid Regragui.
The Substitute's Moment of Brilliance
Any lingering nerves was subsequently eased by a piece of pure genius from Ayoub El Kaabi. Only 10 minutes following his introduction, the forward met a cross with a stunning overhead kick in the 74th minute, making it two and sealing the result.
Earlier in the match, the hosts could have been ahead in the 11th minute when a penalty was awarded for a challenge on Brahim Díaz. However, Rahimi's effort was kept out by Comoros goalkeeper Pandor.
Comoros Resistance and Late Chance
Comoros comfortably held Morocco for long periods before the Moroccans' greater quality eventually made the difference.
Goalkeeper Pandor made several other good stops to limit the score as the match progressed, although Comoros did have a clear opportunity for an equaliser shortly following the first goal, with Saïd shooting straight at keeper Bounou.
Injury Worry for Morocco
The three points was partially overshadowed by an apparent injury to the skipper, Romain Saïss, who was forced off in the 18th minute in tears.
This centre-back had only returned to the international setup last month following a year’s layoff due to a serious ankle operation.
This result extends the team's record-breaking run of consecutive wins to nineteen, beating the previous best of 15 set by the Spanish national team between 2008 and 2009.
