Adult Swim's Top New Show of This Year Gets a Substantial Renewal for an Additional Two Seasons.
During the fall season, Adult Swim saw the return of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. However, not long after, the channel introduced a completely new animated series with a distinctly unique tone. Haha, You Clowns proved to be heartwarming and calm, evoking a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. During a period often defined by cynicism, this show's wholesomeness resonated deeply and propelled it a breakout hit.
A Major Commitment
In mid-December, the network made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two more seasons. This gives creator Joe Cappa ample opportunity to expand upon the story of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose primary trait is their profound affection for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four key characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the fans of the show who took a chance on the show and spread the word," remarked Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for a little longer."
Network Praise
The official statement also included praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and uniquely eerie." He shouted out the fans who found the show and supported its distinctly quirky sensibility.
"All of you showed up for this new show, praised it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Comforting Counterpoint
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a wholesome alternative" to more cynical adult animated fare. Viewers found something surprisingly comfy about following this charming family navigate their simple existence.
In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa stated his hope to help comedy break out of its current sarcastic tone. He attributed this trend to various cultural shifts.
âThere's this level of irony that we keep returning to,â said Cappa. âIt's like we have to know weâre the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we just have to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.â
The Path Forward
Now, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa could potentially help usher in that very evolution. Or at the very least, the renewal ensures audiences more opportunities to enjoy the heartfelt moments of the endearing Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The complete first season is available for streaming on HBO Max.
