A Tragic Transformation Just One Year Has Caused in the US
Twelve months back, the environment was utterly distinct. Ahead of the American presidential vote, considerate residents could admit the country's deep flaws – its inequities and imbalance – but they could still perceive it as America. A democratic nation. A country where legal governance meant something. A nation led by a honorable and decent official, even with his elderly years and growing weakness.
Currently, in late October 2025, numerous citizens scarcely know the land we reside in. People suspected of being unauthorized foreigners are collected and forced into vehicles, occasionally denied due process. The East Wing of the presidential residence – is being destroyed for an obscene dance hall. Donald Trump is persecuting his political rivals or alleged foes and demanding legal authorities transfer an enormous amount of public funds. Armed military personnel are dispatched across metropolitan centers under fabricated reasons. The defense headquarters, relabeled the War Department, has – in effect – rid itself of routine media oversight during its expenditure of what could amount to close to a trillion USD of taxpayer money. Universities, attorney offices, news companies are yielding from leader's menaces, and wealthy elites are handled as nobility.
“America, shortly prior to its 250th birthday as the globe's top democratic nation, has tipped over the edge into authoritarianism and totalitarianism,” a noted author, stated recently. “In the end, more quickly than I imagined possible, it did happen here.”
Every morning starts with fresh terrors. It is difficult to grasp – and agonizing to acknowledge – how deeply lost we have become, and the speed at which it occurred.
Yet, it is known that Trump was duly elected. Following his profoundly alarming first term and following the cautions linked to the awareness of Project 2025 – even after the leader directly said publicly he would rule as a tyrant only on the first day – enough Americans selected him over the other candidate.
While alarming as today's circumstances is, it’s even scarier to understand that we are just three-quarters of a year into this presidential term. Where will an additional three years of this downfall position us? And if the three years turns into a more extended duration, since there is not anyone to limit this leader from determining that another term is essential, possibly for national security reasons?
Granted, all is not lost. There will be legislative votes next year that may establish an alternate balance of power, should Democrats retake one or both houses of the legislature. We have government representatives who are attempting to impose certain responsibility, like representatives who are launching an investigation regarding the effort to fund seizure by federal prosecutors.
And a national vote in 2028 could start our journey to healing just as the previous vote put us on this disappointing trajectory.
There exist numerous residents marching in public spaces across municipalities, similar to recent recently at democracy demonstrations.
Robert Reich, stated lately that “the dormant powerhouse of the nation is rising”, similar to past following the Red Scare in that decade or amid anti-war demonstrations or during the Nixon controversy.
In those instances, the unstable nation finally returned to balance.
Reich says he understands the signs of that awakening and observes it occurring now. As evidence, he references the widespread marches, the widespread, cross-party resistance against a broadcaster's firing and the almost universal refusal by journalists to agree to government requirements they report only what is sanctioned.
“The dormant force always remains dormant until certain corruption becomes so noxious, some action so offensive of societal benefit, specific cruelty so disruptive, that it is forced other than to stir.”
It's a hopeful perspective, and I respect Reich’s experienced view. Maybe he’ll turn out correct.
Meanwhile, the big questions persist: can America return to normalcy? Can it retrieve its position in the world and its commitment to the rule of law?
Or should we recognize that the 250-year-old experiment functioned for a period, and then – abruptly, completely – collapsed?
My cynical mind tells me that the final scenario is true; that everything might be finished. My hopeful heart, however, advises me that we need to strive, in whatever ways possible.
Personally, as an observer of the press, that involves encouraging reporters to adhere, more fully, to their purpose of scrutinizing authority. For some people, it may be engaging with election efforts, or organizing rallies, or developing approaches to defend electoral access.
Less than a year ago, we lived in a very different place. A year from now? Or in several years? The fact is, we cannot predict. All we can do is to attempt to continue fighting.
