The plane battled through wall after wall of sleet during the approach into its destination. A sinking feeling settled over me during the journey, only deepening as I shuffled through the arrivals hall. I felt bitter over returning to the town where I had been raised, after residing on the far side of the world for what had felt like a an eternity.

After a short while, I ventured out to get a my hair cut. My mind was far away, lingering over an ocean, when I heard something strike the ground. I glanced down to see a bird on its back, spatchcocked, and trembling.

The fall happened just as children were emerging from the local elementary school and so within minutes a little crowd of youngsters had assembled, surrounded by their mothers and fathers. This ring of bemused faces peered down at the bird, uncertain what to think or act. The kids were more definitive: “Daddy, she needs help, can we call an emergency service?” I took off my jacket, bent down and gently lifted the pigeon into it. “No problem, dear, the gentleman will look after her!” remarked one mother with a sigh of relief. I had been transformed into the ambulance for this pigeon that had just fallen suddenly, unintentionally, as I had a short time earlier.

I walked slowly home, arms ramrod straight, with the bird tucked safely inside the garment.

Unbeknownst to me that my on-the-spot decision to aid Belinda (the name I bestowed upon my new friend) would direct me to a community of Mancunians giving up significant amounts of time to provide not only transport for street birds but X-rays, respite care, and even “avian physiotherapy”.

I retrieved a small container for Belinda, prepared it with an old shirt, and put her inside. Every half hour or so, I’d open the box just long enough for us to awkwardly lock eyes.

Those moments of common bewilderment interrupted my frantic search for what to do after that. I called friends for suggestions and one suggested trying social media, where, to my surprise, I found a Manchester Pigeon Rehab group, and sent a request to join.

A Community Effort

With a large membership, the group has an anarchic system: someone in Manchester finds an ailing pigeon, a pleading post is made, then a comment section “assessment” takes place. If the bird is considered in need of an examination, someone with a vet link can get it one; if it needs physio, a “rehabilitator” will offer to look after the bird.

Rehabbers each have their own carefully cultivated specialities, whether it’s repairing broken wings or treating wounds. Their significant, collective effort for the pigeons of the city is powered solely by goodwill.

Belinda was promptly assessed with neurological problems, likely a concussion, and assigned to a rehabber who would provide comfort and a program of careful physio. We never found out exactly what caused her to drop from above. I took up the role of pigeon ambulance once more, riding the tram across the city with Belinda in a box on my lap so she could get the treatment she needed.

Rediscovering Home

After finding this underground pigeon “health service”, I began to feel much more positive about being back in my home town. I question any of the places I had called home while away could boast anything remotely similar. It also occurred to me that this was not the first time I’d been involved in a pigeon recovery: almost 20 years earlier I’d witnessed one drop from the sky into the grounds of my high school. Again, children surrounded the bird, but only one – my friend at the time – had the nerve to scoop it up and take it to a safe place.

The friend in question has since been lost – one of a number of companions to lose their lives in the years before my leaving from Manchester. I understood that this had been a major reason of what had made returning home so difficult.

Feathered Support

Pigeons have a history as “companion” animals, especially in the North. Laborers started to keep the birds because they gave them company and an opportunity to look up at the heavens between long shifts of subterranean gloom. During the Depression, workers on the unemployment also found a distraction in pigeons, but keeping them was seen as a sign of “idleness”.

Nowadays, pigeons are often dismissed as unintelligent, unclean or a annoyance. Before finding the rehab group, I had contacted a veterinarian, who told me: “if you bring that here, leave it in the car park and we’ll put it down.”

The bird? Not her. Although unlikely to ever take to the skies , she has embraced her newly grounded life with success in a volunteer’s extra room. Each contented sound, often caused by her favourite food, vegetables, feels like a demonstration in adaptability and fortitude – and I am always appreciative to her for revealing to me a new dimension to the city I was familiar with.
